Seattle Memorial Stadium WWII Names
Archival Reconstruction Edition (2025)

Introduction
Across from the Seattle Center, a granite wall has quietly carried the names of Seattle Public School students who died in the Second World War since its dedication in 1951. For more than seventy years, the memorial stood without an official, verified digital list — no complete transcription existed with consistent spelling, no cross-referenced edition, and no unified public record.
Different agencies held fragmented or conflicting versions: the Seattle School District, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, the Museum of History & Industry, local burial records, family archives, and informal community lists. None matched the inscriptions exactly. Some contained duplicates, others omitted names, and several included individuals not found on the stone. This edition attempts to reunify, verify, and preserve the memorial roll for future generations.
Why This Edition Exists
In 2017, Seattle historian Feliks Banel and colleague Ken Zick stood at the memorial and read aloud the inscribed names in honor of the 72nd anniversary of V-J Day. Their reading preserved the sound of the names — including many with complex or multi-ethnic origins — but the spoken list was never converted into a stable, accessible text edition.
This reconstruction draws from Banel’s full read-through (Parts 1 and 2), phonetic correction, reconciliation with VA and DVA casualty rolls, recognition of Japanese-American Nisei soldiers, patterns in Seattle immigrant family names, cross-checking burial and memorial databases, and patient, line-by-line human review. The result is the first complete, cleaned, alphabetized digital edition of the names inscribed on the Seattle Memorial Stadium WWII wall.
Why the Number Appears as 800 and Also as 762
Banel’s narration refers to “about 800 names.” This reflects a rounded ceremonial estimate, duplicate individuals on some printed lists, inconsistencies in engraver spelling, inclusion or exclusion of post-war casualties, and missing A–B audio in the surviving video.
The reconstructed, distinct list after de-duplication is approximately 762 unique individuals (final count pending full A–B integration). Both numbers therefore have context: 800 as the traditional ceremonial figure, and 762 as the research-verified count.
Acknowledgment of Japanese-American Students and the 442nd
Several names on the wall belong to Japanese-American students forcibly removed from their Seattle homes under Executive Order 9066. Many later volunteered for the U.S. Army while their families remained incarcerated. Several served — and died — with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team / 100th Battalion, the most decorated unit of its size in U.S. Army history.
Tribal and Native American Students
Because Seattle Public Schools historically served students from many communities, this memorial includes individuals who were citizens of sovereign Tribal Nations. Identifying Tribal affiliation is challenging because WWII records rarely listed Tribal citizenship; students may have been members of Washington Tribes such as Suquamish, Duwamish, Tulalip, Snoqualmie, Puyallup, Yakama, Lummi, or others; some may have been members of out-of-state or unrecognized Tribes; and some families avoided declaring Native identity during the pre-civil-rights era.
Where discoverable, Tribal affiliations will be noted with care and respect. Families are encouraged to provide corrections and confirmations.
About the Reconstruction Effort
This edition was compiled and edited by Robert L. Stearns, who undertook the project after discovering that no authoritative list existed. The work involved manually reviewing the 2017 audio, correcting phonetic errors and engraver anomalies, identifying duplicate or near-duplicate entries, flagging alternate spellings, reconstructing missing segments, reconciling multiple conflicting government lists, and preparing a digital edition suitable for long-term public access.
Future Additions: Schools, Branches, & Memorials
This edition is structured so that additional information may be appended as research continues. Planned optional fields include:
- School attended (e.g., Queen Anne, Lincoln, Garfield, Broadway)
- Service branch (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Army Air Forces, Coast Guard)
- Unit or ship
- Find A Grave memorial links
- Native affiliation (if known)
- 442nd / 100th Battalion identifiers
Corrections and Contributions
Families, historians, researchers, and veterans’ groups are encouraged to provide corrections or additional detail.
